SAINT HELENA

11092.5 USB, R St. Helena (1 kW) was heardas follows

on the Double Anniversary Day, Dec. 15, 2007

All times are UTC ;  Reception qualityjudged in SINPO – system.

1730-1815towards New Zealand

1730-1815   Weak carrier, but signal gradually increased. (Herkimer, New York state, USA)

1731                S0-2, poor.  (Titarev, Ukraine;  in “DXplorer”).

1734-1815      35443.  (Rajeesh, Kerala, India)

1749-1815      14332.  (Petersen, Copenhagen area, Denmark)
1751-1815      Too poor signal to copy what was said.  (Liangas, Thessaloniki, Greece)
1802               Degraded here on recheck, sinking in noise.  (Titarev, Ukraine)

1815-1900towards India

1815-1900    Reception quality dramaticallyimproved on Indian beam and blasting out of

                   my SONY ICF-77 reaching55555! At 1835 my e-mail with music dedication

                   to Anker Petersen andothers mentioned. This is a grrreaaat experience!!!!!!!

                   and life time memory!Thanks to those who worked behind the project. (Rajeesh)

1815-1900  Signal improved from 15332 to 35443.

                   Iheard the dedication from Rajeesh! (Petersen)

1815-1900   Heard well. (Thanka Jaisakthivel near  Tamil Nadu, India)

1815-1900   Now with S3!!!! at maximum,24323 with opening audio,

1843       signal is still good, 14332. (Liangas, Greece)
1820       Unexpected rapid upgrade, almost steady solid “3” now(signal S4-S6).

               Heard Rajeesh dedication.    (Titarev, Ukraine)

1827       There but weak at present. (Wilkner, Florida, U.S.A.)
1824 (fade in) – 1900    heard best 35443. (Schulze, Stuttgart, Germany)

1843    Good signal now here in Langen.They JUST read my email greeting on the air.

            Theiraudio is MUCH stronger and better this year.

            We all(Tony Leo, Laura, myself)  worked on that !!  (Kipp, Langen, Germany)

1845    Definite audio now. (Berg, Mass., U.S.A.)
1900    Clear in Florida. (Wilkner, Florida, U.S.A.)

1900-2015towards Japan

1900-2015      Signal’spower was weaker than last year. It was very weak at my location.

                       I had receivedbroadcasts of RSH for all service areas.   I think that directivity

                       of RSH’stransmission is weakly. (Tomoaki Wagai, Wakayama, Japan)

1900-2015      Signal varying between 25343 and 34443. (Petersen, Denmark)

1900-2015      Until 1915   35343, then staticnoise and 35242 and

                        after 1958 signal droppedto QSA 2-1. (Schulze, Germany)

1900-2015        Fair reception. (Liangas, Greece)

1930    Havethreshold reception , which is somewhat surprising. (Wilkner, Florida,USA)

1950    Weak but improving. (Jensen , Wisconsin, U.S.A.; in”DXplorer”)

2012    Signal swings between poor/fair,noise increasing, S2-S4 now;

           QSB (fading) is faster anddeeper. (Titarev, Ukraine)

2015-2145towards Europe

2015-2145      Very good reception here, 35444. Robert Kipp mentioned me at2124

                     and 2138 when also ( Toshi Ohtake, Kamakura, Japan)

2108           E-mailreport from John Campbell (Devon area in UK).  (Petersen, Denmark)

2015-2145  Enjoyed reception with S7 on theNRD-535 with a longwire and  even heard on

                   a portable Sony SW-55 witha telescopic antenna. (Koie, Holte ,Denmark)

2015-2145  Poor reception here due to localnoise.

                   Heard Anker Petersenmentioned. (Bredahl Jorgensen, Greve, Denmark)

2015-2145  I heard it with fair receptionon a DEGEN 1102 and telescopic antenna.

                       (Frederiksen, Fredericia, Denmark)

2015-2145      Static noise, so 35232 – 25231.(Schulze, Germany)

2015-2145      Almost completely readable.(Herkimer, USA)

2015-2021      Good signal towards Europe,35433. (Méndez, Lugo/Friol, Spain)

2015-2040      Heard with 35433. (Cody, Nenagh, Ireland)

2015-2045      I heard it with S 3-4, butfrequency band 10-14 MB was very noisy.

                          (Nielsen, Hareskovby, Denmark)

2015-2115      Good signal in Buenos Aires, 25332. (Slaen, Salto Argentino, Argentina)

2020-2040         Improving signal here. By 2030 signal was steadyand readable. The Sony 2010XA pulled in the signal well at 2035-2040 with whipantenna at the nearby river DX location. (Wilkner,Florida, USA))

2055    I have a decent signal if I takethe E1 outside to get away

               from the noise in thehouse.(Dan Ferguson, Virginia, USA)

2100    Now with clear signal, best on the60 m. dipole. (Wilkner, USA)

2115    Signal swings between poor/fairS2-S4, noise increasing,

           QSB (fading)is faster anddeeper. (Titarev, Ukraine)

2145-2245towards North America East

2145-2245      25332. (Schulze, Germany)

2145-2245      Best quality when directedtoward North America of course.

                  Was fascinated by thesignal as the  direction changed and the antenna used here

         also changed. The medium waveNoise Reducing Antenna was most consistent, but the

       60 mb dipole also worked well as didthe on the ground antenna. (Wilkner, Florida, USA)

2145-2245      A big boost at 2145 withbeam to ECNA. Tony Leo greeted listeners, took

            calls, etc. At one point hementioned they had received 167 e-mails, but I did not hear

    individual messages acknowledged asthey did last year.  Overall it was not as strong at this

      location compared to last year’sbroadcast. (Herkimer, Caledonia, New York state, USA)

2145-2245   Started fading in around 2115or so and steadily improved;  peaked around 2230

                 with no noticeable changewhen the beam was switched to West/Central NorthAm.

                 at 2245. (Wilkins, Colorado, U.S.A.,  in “DXplorer”)

2145-2207      Itwas very weak and nothing further intelligible on the YB-400 with indoor

                  wire wrapped severaltimes around the ceiling of one room. Experimenting with

                other receiver and antennacombinations, best results not on the FRG-7, but on the

                DX-398 with primary E-Wexterior longwire. (Hauser, Oklahoma, U.S.A)

2146    Transmitter antenna turned and signalstrength became weaker, 25442. (Petersen, DK)

2212-2245      Better signal than lastyear, peaking during the NAm. beam heading.

                        (Jensen, Kenosha, WI, U.S.A.;  in “DXplorer”)

2222-2240      Heard with 15541. (S. Shiraishi,Sendai, Japan)

2245-2330towards North America West

2245-2330        At peak was S-9 on the outside RW and S-7 on theindoor loop! Started deteriorating a bit after than but still good until 2330. (Wilkins, Colorado, U.S.A.; in “DXplorer”)

2245-2307     Signalwas considerably better, steady at 8 out of 14 bars on the scale

                      when RF gain at max. (Hauser, Oklahoma, USA)

2245-2330     Fading out, S only 3. (Schulze, Germany)

2330-0015towards South America North

2330-0015      Heard with 54344. (Paulero, Provincia de Buenos Aires,Argentina

                        and this info via   R.Grimm, São Bernardo, SP, Brazil)

2330    There was a sudden drop, presumablythe switch to S.Am beam. Gone by 0000.

                (Wilkins, Colorado, USA;  in “DXplorer”)

2335       Heard with 35533. (Grimm, São Bernardo, SP, Brazil)

2338-0015   Heard with 25443. (Gonçalves, Lisboa/Aljezur,Portugal)

2350       Readable, but not a greatsignal. (Wilkner, Pompano Beach, Florida, U.S.A.)

0015-0100towards South AmericaCentral/South

0015-0040      Bettersignal at 0030 despite azimuth change;

                       25443 and onlymarginal audio. (Gonçalves, Lisboa, Portugal)

0024    Bad reception at this hour. (Slaen, Buenos Aires /SaltoArgentino, Argentina)

0045    Not audible. (Hauser, Oklahoma, USA)

NOTEs about methods of judging receptionquality:

SINPO –system for judging reception quality (used by SWL’s):

S” :  Strength                               (5 is very strong ; 1 is barely audible)

I” :   Interference (man-made)    ( 5 is none ;  1 is severe)

N” : Noise (atmospheric)(static) ( 5 is none ;  1 is severe)

P” :  Fading (of thesignal)           ( 5 is none;  1 is severe)

O” :  Overall Merit(Readability)  ( 5 is excellent;  1 is essentially not readable )

In Amateur Radio terms, a 3-letter “Q-code“is used for each of the five SINPO factors:

S <=> QSA    ( 1 = barelyaudible ; 9 = extremely strong )

I <=>   QRM ( 1 = very slight; 5 = extreme )

N <=>             QRN   ( 1 =very slight ; 5 = extreme )

P <=> QSB    ( 1 = veryslight ; 5 = extreme )

O <=>             QRK   ( 1 =essentially unreadable ; 5 = perfectly readable )

Amateur Radio also uses the “RST“–system.

For voice signals, only “RS“is used.

R” <=> Readability    (as QRK)  ( 1 = essentially unreadable ; 5 = perfectly readable)

S” <=> Strength     (as QSA)  ( 1 = barely audible ; 9 = extremely strong )
