Who does one contact about buying (or building) a house? Renting an office or storage facility? Discovering local food prices? I appreciate any help you can offer me. Below the reply I received from Donald Thomas, living on the Island. Hope this will help you on your Thomas search. One of my Barkers: Harriett Rose Barker from East Lodge 19 years old and a spinster married James Archibald a shopkeeper from Jamestown 25 years old on 12 May 1860 in St Pauls church on the Island. The witnesses were Doritt or Darrit Scott and Sarah Murphy. The records of most of the St. Helena families' marriage, death and births are stored in South Africa at the William Cullen Library at Wits University in Johannesburg. Hope this will be of some help to you. I was a bit hesitant to publish the letter below on this list, as it contains somewhat personal info but in the interrest of geneology I thought it of importance. Regards from Namaqualand Elize Hough www.hondeklip.co.za 12.5.97 Dear Madam I am writing in response to your request on any information on the Barker family from St. Helena that left the island to go to South Africa. Well as far as I am aware from talk?s [sic.] from some very old people from the Island of which most have past on [sic.], there was a man by the name of John Barker, I remember him when I was a child. Seeing him walking in the street with his felt hat on and overcoat. He was a very dark man, imagine to my surprise many years later, this was in the early seventies when I learn?t from a man from Levelwood by the name of Arnold Thomas, and he told me that this John Barker was my grandfather being my mother?s father my mother?s name was Dorothy Thomas, but many people on the island called her Dorrie Barker because they said her father was John Barker. When I was a boy growing up I ended up with the name Barker as well, people call me Donald Barker and they still do today. But my real name is Donald Thomas and Mrs Aggie O? Conner is in fact my Auntie, my mothers sister but she has never been called a Barker because her father was a [sic.] another man. Although they had the same mother, Lena Elizabeth, Thomas. My grandmother never entered my mothers, fathers name on the birth certificate. But I believe from older folks that John Barker was indeed my mothers father and my grandfather. I was unable to see you before you left the island because I heard about it a day before the ship left but I was very please [sic.] when I saw this week?s newspaper your name and address in it and I decided to write to you. So I am going to write a bit about my family and also about myself. My grandmothers name wa Lena Elizabeth Thomas she gave birth to four daughters, there was Aggie, May, Jessie and my mother Dorothy. The first three was born I believe to men from out-side the island most likely soldiers of sailors. My mother was born from the island. She was of african desent. I believe she looked every bit like her father my mother gave birth to four children. 3 boys and a girl, I am the oldest. I was born on the 4th September 1948, my two other brothers are both of the island. There is Mervyn in the U.K and Anthony on Ascension Island. My sister is living here on the island, I am married with four children of my own and I live at Half tree Hollow high above Jamestown. My childhood days and most of my adult life I spent in Jamestown my grandmother use [sic] to go around washing and polishing for people to help to put some food on the table because my mother never married, I left school at the age of 14 yrs to help to support the family after my grandmother passed away. Then in 1984 my mother passed away at the age of only 51 yrs. I have also been very sick and had to go to South Africa in 1992 with colitus and had to have my large bowl removed and I must go to Cape Town every 2 years for a checkup. Well Mrs Hough I hope I have been some help to you. I hope to meet you sometime God willing, because I was very upset in not meeting you and your husband, knowing now that I could have some family out in world [sic.] that I never knew I had. So I look forward to learning from you in the future. Yours Donald. F.
