How was New Years on St. Helena? Can't believe it's been 5 years now since I've been there. Have to get back again one of these years. This has probably been discussed and I've just missed it, but... is there an estimate of a time frame between when the RMS will no longer be a valid option and when an airport would be finished? I assume if the RMS breaks or is too old, another ship will have to be chartered to take its place, but we're still talking quite a long time for the airport to be built and an airline organized... This is a common misconception. Only the freehold of Longwood was granted to the French government, but it is still British territoty. The French merely own it. The freehold of part of the Briars estate was given to the French much later. Recently the French Consul bought a few acres of the rest of the Briars for himself. I recently received a call from an employment agency who were looking for a service engineer with electrical motor experience, to service and repair Wind turbines. I have submitted my CV for the position but have also decided to search the internet to see what information I could find out about the company concerned. A quick search using the terms Cockermouth (home to Wharrels Hill Wind Farm and visitor centre) and Windfarm turned up an archieved article from this list about the wind turbines located on the Island. I don't know if the company I am applying to for a job are the people who make the ones on St Helena, but it will be an interesting little anecdote to throw into the interview. Happy new year every one Jon Dingey East London Correspondant From manager at sainthelenabank.com Mon Jan 16 14:28:25 2006 From: manager at sainthelenabank.com (John Turner, Manager, Bank of St. Helena) Date: Mon Jan 16 14:28:53 2006 Subject: [STHELENA] Cruise Ship Days Message-ID: <004f01c61aa0$bda53c10$0a0b000a@shgbank10> Cruise ship days are - er - different. Today is a cruise ship day, and Jamestown has an unusual bustle for a Monday. Normally Monday is a day for recovering from the weekend. It is often suggested that nothing much happens in St. Helena, and the day in which it doesn't happen the most is normally Monday. So the relative flurry of activity is decidedly different. There are the usual tourist attractions for the visitors to enjoy, such as Napoleon's House (open all day - very unusual) and his tomb (which is a nice woodland walk, though the tomb itself, being a concrete slab surrounded by railings, is less than captivating). In addition, some people have set up an impromptu concert outside the Canister building, so I have music to accompany my working day. On the whole it creates a nice atmosphere, though they have just played "Single Yellow Rose" (a song which I hate) on an accordion (an instrument which I hate). Earlier I saw a collection of 'Taxis' heading down to the wharf, presumably to take the visitors on tours around the island. The ship is on a SAGA cruise, so the passengers are mostly of the 'retired' persuasion, but some of them are clearly quite brave if they are going to travel up Side Path on the 'taxi' that just went down. It's a flatbed lorry with wooden bench seats loosely attached to the floor (it's a delivery vehicle the rest of the time). There is no sun shade and, of course, no seat belts . An amusing aspect is the number of police around. I can only think of two reasons why there would need to be so many. One is that they are expecting the tourists to start a riot, battering unsuspecting islanders to death with their panama hats; the other is that they have been asked by the tourist board to get out there and get photographed ('gee, honey, a genuwine English bobby'). Anyway, the 'band' have now brought in a singer, and I think I may have to shut the door, so I'll sign off for now. Greetings from a sunny, humid and busy Jamestown. Which cruise ship lines stop regularly? It occurs to me that a cruise might satisfy my longing to see both South Africa and St Helena. I have never gone on a cruise and have been a horrible sailor on smaller yachts in the Caribbean sea so am not sure that the south Atlantic is the place to explore my sea legs. Happy New Year and thanks for the view into St Helena. I am going to search the internet for "non retired" cruises. I recently had to attend 2 funerals on the same day!! One was for my Aunt (Gwendolin Miriam Noble, nee King) who was the last member of my family to be born on St Helena, she was the eldest daughter of my Grandmother Dorothy King, nee Bizarre. It was her wish that the service be non-denominational and that there be a simple service followed by a party so that every one would have a good time. No problem there we all thought, after all its nice to try and feel as happy as you can on such a sad occassion. The second funeral was for a work friend who died in his sleep at work (Split 12 hour shift on the London Underground involves working the last 4 hours on one day, then having 4 to 5 hours sleep at work in the bunk room, before finishing the first run of the following day) Sadly my friend died whilst sleeping and was discovered by his manager when he hadn't signed on for duty to collect his train. His wish was for everyone who attended his funeral and the party afterwards to tell a funeral related joke, so that his funeral would be an occassion to laugh. Here's mine:- A man was leaving Starbucks with his morning coffee when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 20 feet behind. Behind the second hearse was a solitary man walking a pit bull dog on a leash. Behind him were 200 men walking single file. The man couldn't stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the man walking the dog and said, "I am so sorry for your loss, and I know this is a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?" The man replied, "Well that first hearse is for my wife." "What happened to her?" "My dog attacked and killed her." "Well, who is in the second hearse?" The man answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my wife when the dog turned on her". A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passes between the two men. "Can I borrow the dog?" "Sure" replied the man with the dog "join the queue."
