From lgreenf at ktb.net Wed May 18 18:21:21 2005 From: lgreenf at ktb.net (Larry Greenfield) Date: Wed May 18 18:21:46 2005 Subject: [STHELENA] RE: Being in a hurry .... References: Message-ID: <004801c55bc5$a111a420$6400a8c0@main> I saw this and laughed. I had never driven a stickshift before (except once just around a block when I was 16) and when I knew I was going to St. Helena I knew I'd have to learn. A friend who had a stickshift car gave me a 2-minute lesson and let me drive it around the block a few times right before I left, and then there I was on those roads in St. Helena. I was so afraid of doing something stupid, but somehow managed ok. For the first day I let the family I was staying with drive it down Ladder Hill from HTH to Jamestown (not wanting to tackle that road right at first). Down in Jamestown, I got in in front of the post office and drove it around for a few minutes before attemtping any of the hills. I kept it slow, careful, and mindful of the hills, and thankfully never had a problem, using it for 5 days. As someone who is not used to a stick at ALL, it was interesting that you never really get above 2nd gear on the island (once I got it into 3rd before I had to put it back to 2nd). You just don't go that fast and there are only a few straightaways. So if anyone is planning to go, you will have to use a standard car not automatic. But I think it's worth doing (renting) as it opens up the island, especially if you're there only for a few days. As for the never-changing webcam, well, that's St. Helena. :) Seriously though, there's now Saint FM... pretty good station running 24/7 and you can listen online. Tony Thornton, whom some may remember, ignored everyone's advice and bought two automatic minis for his use, and I recall watching one of them take nearly five minutes to reach ten miles an hour going up hill outside his house on Side Path! Driving on the island can be verrry interesting - a later Ford Zephyr I drove had a high square bonnet line, making it impossible to see the road as you came over the hill and round the bend at Levelwood - you just prayed you remembered which way the road turned and that there was no-one coming the other way. Tessa and Larry, how did you get on reversing up the hill on Side Path or Ladder Hill Road? That's always a challenge! Fond memories... Message-ID: John - Reversing uphill on Ladder Hill was was to say the least a challenge, and for me who learned to drive (automatic) in the USA, I was learning to drive a stick shift from the other side of the car, on the other side of the road! I was on the island with my best friend Karen, who is accustomed to the wide, flat roads of Cleveland, Ohio. She drives a stick shift so we started of with Karen doing all the driving. It terrified her!! In addition to the narrow roads, blind turns and hairpins turns, I regularly reminded her to release her tight grip on the steering wheel to wave to each car or person we passed (lest we seem unfriendly). She threw in the towel after a particularly hairy, inclined, sharp turn just below Stedson George's house. I was forced to learn. I loved it but it terrified me as well for a little while. Coming down Ladder Hill Road into town was the worst. Traffic coming out of Jamestown, up Ladder Hill Road has right of way. The day I caused the "traffic jam" at Long Turning was the worst. I thought I was clear and continued on. I was met by a bus!!...I had to reverse back up but was so close to the wall (left, driver side) that I was afraid to take my foot of the brake and roll into the wall before being able to get the car to reverse. Over the waist high wall is the cliff....and Jamestown. Much of the hold up was me working up the courage to take my foot of the brake. I was on the island for six weeks and eventually got comfortable. I am proud to say I even braved the road to Sandy Bay Beach - heavy on the brakes! In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <003401c55c97$2eaeec80$0a0b000a@shgbank10> Here, for the benefit of those used to automatics, is a driving tip. This works better if you have a 'stick shift' (=manual) car to practice on before trying it on Ladder Hill. One you have learned it, it is guaranteed to solve the problem "I was afraid to take my foot of the brake and roll into the wall before being able to get the car to reverse". 1: apply the handbrake. 2: Depress the clutch pedal fully and engage the relevant gear (1st or reverse). 3: slowly release the clutch until it begins to bite (you have to learn to feel it - it can't be described in words) 4: release the handbrake and continue releasing the clutch. The car will move off smoothly without rolling back. When practicing you will normally stall the engine at step 3, until you get it right. Once you have mastered it, you can start off up a hill of any magnitude, forward or reverse, without any fear of rolling anywhere. Where manual cars are the norm, everyone learns this .... It was probably best left to the more experienced drivers to get the hang of doing a hill start in one of those. As for driving an automatic on St Helena, I would have thought that all those hills would have made them virtually un-usable. Strange that no one has mentioned a push bike yet!! Things have changed now, but I would imagine that St Helena has a simular problem with sea spray Regards Jon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Larry Greenfield" To: ; "All about St. Helena - The Island in the South Atlantic(Eng)" Sent: Saturday, May 21, 2005 5:35 PM Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] Re: [STHELENA] RE: Being in a hurry .... > (Delayed, I know) > Tessa, John, and everyone, interesting stories on driving, and good > driving tips, thanks! > I did remember seeing a few new cars on the island, wondering to myself > how long they'd last before they looked like all the other cars :) > Besides, the salt air can't be good for cars. > Larry > > The S:t Helena Mailing List > To unsubscribe please send a email to: > list-leave@sthelena.se and answer the confirm mail. > > From tmhughley at wcbcorps.com Mon May 23 17:41:46 2005 From: tmhughley at wcbcorps.com (Tessa M. We went on the RMS for the 2001 solar eclipse and Stedson was on the ship for the eclipse. After the eclipse we stayed for 3 weeks on St Helena. We purchased a 10 inch telescope in England and donated it to the High School. As you probably know, Stedson is the island 'astronomer'.
