I am now on-island, and from my office in Jamestown I can look out over
the sea and the street.
I know many on this list are not currently in St. Helena, but if you
come over for a visit please pop into the bank and ask for me.

MessageGo on then rub it in!! I'm sat in my flat in east London looking out over a traffic jam at out local lady of the night (tryting to earn her next fix) and where are you? On a quiet warm South Atlantic Ocean island. Trust me, if I ever win the lottery, I'll pay you a visit, otherwise I'm off to work tomorrow to fix London's commuter trains.
Don't worry, I'm not really that jealous (yet) but I'm working on it. Does anyone on St Helena have an opening for a highly skilled and qualified Train Maintainer who is looking to relocate?
Best wishes
Jon

Hi there!
I can empathize with Jon. I am sitting in my office
on an unusually warm winter day in North Dakota (30
degrees) and even though I am happy about the "warm"
spell it seems to pale in comparison to the recent
description of John Turner's office overlooking the
ocean! I don't know about living on St. Helena but I
would sure love a couple of months out of the year.
Just out of curiosity are there any social workers
employed on the island?

We don't even use a train maintainer here in Palm Springs, California.
However, there are train tracks near here.
As I look out my back window I see three mountain peaks covered with snow
that cover the entire distant 180-degree view. Toro Peak is just under 9,000
feet high; San Jacinto is just under 11,000 feet high; and San Gorgonio is just
under 12,000 feet high. The sky is blue and the sun is warm with the
temperature at 70-degrees exactly, here at 1610 hours; local time.
Think I will go for a ride on my BMW K1200RS.

Social Services is not a big thing in St. Helena for the simple reason
that it largely isn't necessary: everybody cares for everyone else.
There is a fair amount of social education done, but few of the problems
caused by the modern (Western) 'anonymous' society apply here.

In a previous list, questions were asked about St Helena's currency. I vaguely remembered one particular aspect of the reasons why its exists but have only just re-found where I had read it. It is copied and paraphrased below.
'Why does St Helena not use British Currency? By having its own currency, the Island's British Sterling is being invested and this generates much needed revenue for the Island. Annually some ?200,000 to ?240,000 is transferred from the Currency Fund to general revenue and it is then used to assist with expenses associated with the provision of services on the Island. Since the Island is making much needed revenue from having its own currency, there are no plans to change back to Sterling.'

As an additional factor, St. Helena banknotes and coins are very
collectable - there is a significant trade to numismatists worldwide,
which would not be the case if the country used UK notes and coins.
The Falklands also has its own notes and coins, probably using a similar
model.

Now I really am loosing the will to live (just kidding)
Well its another grotty night here in deepest East London as I sit here and contemplate my employers wisdom in sending me home from work (albeit on full pay) Apparently I should have been stood down after I attended a railway fatality last Tuesday, but no one remembered to send me home, so it looks like I am getting a long weekend. As I look out of my back window, I can see the main line running out of the back of Ilford station going towards Central London. The rail viaduct soars to a height of about 60 feet (so they have a long way to go before they reach the height of your mountains or even that of Diana's peak)
The only good thing to look forward to would be riding my Honda ST1100 motorcycle, but hey is this is multiculteral London and the sign I have on my garage door says "No Parking" in only 4 languages, so realistically what chance do I have not finding that some idiot has parked across the doorway? I don't suppose that you even have to take your car keys out of the ignition on St Helena do you? Would any of the residents of St Helena know what a Crook Lock or Dead Lock is? Thought not!
Well thats my despondant musing over with. If anyone else wishes to make me feel really happy about my existence here in London by telling me just how great it is in there part of the world, well that would be just grand, otherwise I'm off to the pub.
Have a good weekend everybody
Jon

Subject: [STHELENA] St Helena's currency

A question for John.
Collecting St Helena's stamps means there is welcome trade and income via the Post Office.
But am I right in thinking collecting St Helena's coins merely means more coins have to be minted and is therefore a cost to the SHG.
On a seperate subject, Is there any opportunity for SHG to 'trade' in whatever overseas currency comes its way or is it just send it back to where it came from whith the accompanying overheads?
Kind regards

I'm not sure about the answer to your first question because the
currency issue happens within the currency board, not within the bank.
On the issue of foreign currency, we tend to retain what we receive in
Sterling and South African Rand because we can supply it later to
islanders who are travelling to these countries. Dollars we receive are
more of a problem but we are working on a solution to that one. We very
rarely get offered anything else. We will soon be able to advance cash
on international credit cards, so that will reduce the influx of foreign
notes.

know the good news - yet. I hope he will return and give his complete
address.
Greetings from a quite cold Sweden (just now -6 C) but the good news is -

I am happy to try and help reunite families and friends, but with a small
caveat: I cannot just look up 'phone numbers or email addresses and email
them around to others - that would not be fair to the privacy of the people
concerned. Also I don't have the spare time to run an ad-hoc people-search
bureau. Sorry.
What I have done is to look up all the Ellicks in the St. Helena email
directory and forward the message below to them, with a request that they
reply if they are wiling and able to help.
I hope that helps.

Hello!
My name is Alexander Rydmark. A couple of years ago I heard an interview
that my grandfather recorded in 1955. He was talking to his aunt Anna, born
in 1870. She told him that one of her brothers left Sweden for South Africa.
He later worked at a prison camp at St Helena. Does anyone know anything
about him? This should be around the year 1900, I suppose. I also understand
that he had several children. Do you know anything about their whereabouts?
I think that my ancestor still carried the name Johansson.
Sincercerly, Alexander Rydmark

Hello Alexander,
There are a few Andersons on the island still(with one 's', no doubt Anglacized) . (I believe I am related to the Andersons as well) Many of the Andersons (on St. Helena) have blue eyes.
I hope you find some additional information.
Tessa

Whilst attempting to educate my kids about that island in the South Atlantic where my family come from I decided to have a look on the web for any pictures that may help explain it to some of todays playstation/MTV dependant children. I remember that there used to be some good ones on the St Helena official website. In particular I was deperate to find a picture of Jonathon the tortoise as my kids wouldn't believe he was 170 (ish) years old.
I was extremely happy to find the following website, which contains some great pictures of Africa and St Helena. Take a look at them
1. Africa in general http://www.worldisround.com/articles/14159/index.html
2. St Helena http://www.worldisround.com/articles/14159/photo77.html
Have fun
Jon

I am trying to trace my great grandmother and family . She was born Henrietta Louisa Thomas in 1848. Her father was Ivan/Evan Thomas, carpenter and her mother was Anne/Alice. (I am not sure of the exact names as I believe the microfiche are quite difficult to decipher). Henrietta left the island as a young woman and appears in the 1881 English census in Liverpool, married to Thomas Kelly. They had 2 children, Henrietta and Alice. Alice was my grandmother.
I would appreciate any information.
Many thanks.
Diane
